I am a postpartum doula and pediatric sleep consultant supporting mothers and families in-person in Western CT. Virtual support is available anywhere! To reach out, fill out this form. I typically respond within 1-2 business days.
A postpartum doula supports the entire family by assisting with newborn care, guiding feeding and sleep routines, providing emotional support, and helping with light household tasks to ease the transition into parenthood.
Postpartum doulas are focused on the aftermath of birth and helping to care for parents and babies. These doulas can perform a variety of household tasks, like baby laundry or meal prep, as well as take care of the baby for short periods. They may also focus on mental health in the postpartum period, nurturing the new mother, and helping parents make this transition. Postpartum doulas have evidence-based information when you need it so you can spend your time bonding with your baby instead of sifting through conflicting advice.
Doulas are in no way meant to take on the same role as your partner. Your partner knows you, your comforts, your emotions, and what you need better than anyone, and will be a huge part of your birth, recovery, and postpartum period. Doulas come with knowledge about pregnancy, birth, and postpartum that your partner may not have and can help them find the best way to apply that knowledge to you. We love to work with partners, giving them tips for comfort measures and empowering them to be a part of the journey.
Postpartum doulas provide holistic family support, including the mother's recovery, newborn care, and household needs. The goal of a postpartum doula is to set parents up for success in caring for their babies when she is no longer needed. Doulas also offer more comprehensive care since they have specialized training in emotional support and education in a variety of areas beneficial to new parents. They also work closely with other birth professionals and can often provide a list of resources and referrals.
Baby nurses, on the other hand, focus mainly on infant care.
The duration of support varies according to each family's unique needs. Some families choose short-term help, while others benefit from a few weeks or even months of regular support. We will work together to find what's right for you.
Postpartum doulas do not perform anything medical, such as examining mother and baby, giving medications, diagnostic testing such as temperature and weight checks, or diagnosing any conditions. Any concerns will be referred to your care provider.
Postpartum doulas help with light household tasks (meal prep, laundry, dishes, and general tidying, etc.), but are not professional cleaners and therefore do not clean house.
Postpartum doulas will care for your baby while you are home or go to an appointment if needed but are not considered babysitters and therefore do not solely care for your other children.
While crying is normal and one of your baby's ways of communicating, my approach is gentle and respects each family's comfort level. I never recommend a family leave their baby alone to "cry it out". Together, we will create a plan that feels right for you and your baby. I will support any feelings YOU may have when your baby cries while teaching you what their different cries mean and prioritize nurturing strategies to encourage healthy sleep.
Although each child and family situation is different if you follow my plan and remain consistent in your new routines, you will see great progress! Some situations can be resolved in as little as a few days, while other more challenging issues (especially when the baby is older and has been used to a certain way of going to sleep for some time) may need more time. Even in the most extreme cases, it is possible to see progress in some areas very quickly. I will help you to recognize progress and to celebrate even the smallest wins you and your child make. As a team, we will get you to a much better place than where you started!
I help you select essential items and services to meet your family's unique needs, from baby gear to postpartum care items and services. Safety is very important to me, so I will educate you on all things related to the safety of your baby (including safe bed sharing since most families never plan to bring their baby into bed with them, but end up out of desperation). Much of what families register for is not useful and takes up a lot of space. No need to spend countless hours researching products or reading conflicting suggestions on social media. I can help you avoid all that! Together we'll create a registry that's practical and supportive.
Yes! Many families add doula support to their registry, allowing loved ones to contribute to services that truly help you feel prepared and supported during early postpartum.
In addition to cribs, strollers, and car seats, I suggest essential items that support your postpartum recovery and your baby's needs. Items such as quality baby carriers, feeding supplies, and postpartum care items like belly binding and nourishing foods are things that are most helpful in those early weeks.
“I would recommend Kristin as a postpartum doula to anyone. I am so grateful to have had her support when I needed it most. Kristin's expertise and gentle ways allowed me to enjoy my baby and feel confident about my mothering.”
